About Phase Two Funding
As trainees progress into Phase Two of the Grad2Teach programme, they typically follow one of three QTS pathways: PGCE, Teaching Apprenticeship, or Assessment Only (AOR). Each pathway offers distinct benefits and funding options, and we work with schools to help determine the best fit based on subject, experience, and school context.
Trainees on the PGCE route complete a university-accredited qualification in parallel with their in-school training.
Schools have the option to sponsor the trainee’s university fees, which are set at £2,300 per term. Sponsoring these fees can support trainee motivation and retention, and all fee-funded trainees will be placed on a retention agreement to encourage long-term continuity within your school.
This pathway is fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy, meaning there are no university tuition fees for either the school or the trainee.
In addition, many schools may be eligible for government salary grants of up to £29,000, depending on the subject area and phase. These grants are designed to reduce the cost of employing the trainee during their apprenticeship year.
Trainees on the AOR route do not undertake formal university instruction during preparation, but they are assessed against the Teachers’ Standards in their final term, and this requires university involvement to award QTS.
As such, university assessment fees apply in the final term. These fees are not eligible for Student Finance England and must be covered by either the trainee or the sponsoring school.
If a trainee is enrolled on our Not Only Assessment Pathway and remains active with Grad2Teach for more than three terms, Grad2Teach will cover the final QTS assessment fees on the school’s behalf.
